Defining Child Abuse

Child abuse isn't limited to physical abuse which is usually the first type of abuse that comes to mind. Abuse can take many forms which can make it difficult to define and differentiate. So legal definitions can vary. In the U.S. these boundaries are recognized in different ways according to every state. On the federal level, the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) states that abuse is "any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caregiver that results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse,or exploitation, or an act or failure to act that presents an imminent risk of serious harm."
